Driving licence: exchange - in EU driving licence

Since 1 January 1999, Germany has had a number of changes in the law on driving licences. Among other things, it regulates the introduction of the uniform european card driving licence: completely new class designations and higher minimum requirements for examination.
Holders of old driving licences are advised to permanently exchange the old "cloth" for an EU card driving licence. However, unless lorries, taxis or buses are operated, the ticket does not have to be exchanged and therefore remains valid.

The application must be submitted in person in writing.

Although the driving licence classes have been re-designated and categorised, the driving licences issued under the old law remain fully valid.
