Foreign affairs

Legal provisions for foreigners are derived from international agreements, European Union law and national law. In national law, the Residence Act regulates the entry, residence, employment and promotion of the integration of foreigners in Germany.

The Residence Act does not contain any final rules for the residence of a foreigner in the Federal Republic of Germany. Where a legal offence does not tie in with a person's status as a foreigner, the general laws apply. Foreigners, like nationals, must comply with the legal standards of bidding and prohibition.

Entry is only permitted if it is carried out in accordance with the Law on Residence and the related legislation.

Integration is the right and duty of foreigners living here in the long term. Integration efforts by foreigners are supported by a basic integration offer (integration course).
