Investigations before the application of sewage sludge to the ground

Sewage sludge may only be applied to agricultural or horticultural soils in such a way that the public welfare is not adversely affected. The application must be geared to the nutrient requirements of the plants according to type, quantity and time.

For this reason, operators of a waste water treatment plant are obliged to have their content of heavy metals examined by soil before first applying sewage sludge to agricultural or horticultural soils.
The soil must also have been tested for pH, the content of plant-available phosphate, potassium and magnesium. The costs of carrying out this soil survey shall be borne by the operator of the waste water treatment plant.

In addition, sewage sludge must also be tested for the content of heavy metals and certain other substances.
