Implanting identification chips in dogs

The identification chips are implanted by the competent authority.

The data about the dog and the owner are recorded on the chip. This information shall be compiled in the official Dutch dog register in order to be able to identify the keeper if necessary.

If the dog already has a chip (e.g. for the EU pet card or for the Tasso register), the chip number must be reported to the central register together with the information on the holder and the dog. The dog does not need to be chipped again. The old chip number remains valid.

The chip does not replace the dog brand, because the stamp is used to prove that the dog tax was paid for the dog in question. In many towns and cities, affixing the brand to the dog's collar is still mandatory.
