Applying for a settlement permit for highly qualified specialists
In special cases, highly qualified foreign nationals can obtain a settlement permit without prior residence periods in Germany. In particular, the following are considered highly qualified in this sense:
- Scientists with special specialist knowledge or
- teachers in a prominent function, or
- scientific staff in a prominent function.

Requirements
The prerequisites for the settlement permit are:
- They meet the passport and visa requirements.
- Your livelihood is secured without using public funds.
- There is no ground for expulsion against you.
- Your stay does not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
- They are highly qualified in the sense mentioned above.
- Their integration into the living conditions of the Federal Republic of Germany is ensured.
Note: Highly qualified persons are not entitled to participate in an integration course
Which documents are required?
- Proof of compliance with passport and visa requirements
- Proof of secure livelihood
- Proof of professional or scientific qualification
- Employment contract
- Proof that there are no grounds for expulsion against you
- Proof that you do not endanger or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany
- Proof that your integration into the living conditions of the Federal Republic of Germany is secured.
Depending on the other requirements you need to meet, the competent authority may require additional documentation. Please inquire at the responsible foreign representation or the immigration authority which documents are required.
What are the fees?
Fee: 147,00 EURPayment in advance: no
Appeal
- Appeal against the decision of the immigration authority within one month of notification.
- Legal action before the court named in the objection notice if the objection is not upheld.
