Special species and habitat protection
The "Special Protection of Species and Habitats" measure supports investment, non-productive projects that contribute to the preservation and improvement of biological diversity. The focus is on safeguarding the European ecological network Natura 2000 as well as on nature conservation and large-scale protected areas.
The aim is to develop and restore the characteristic agricultural landscape with its diverse habitat structures and typical communities of animal and plant species. The special protection of species and biotopes is thus an important supplement to the environment-related support measures that are implemented directly on the agricultural land (agri-environmental and climate measures).
Who should I contact?
The responsibility lies with the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN).
Responsible authorities
Niedersächsischer Landesbetrieb für Wasserwirtschaft, Küsten- und Naturschutz (NLWKN)
Requirements
Projects must contribute to the restoration, conservation and enhancement of biodiversity. The focus of the funding is on safeguarding the European ecological network Natura 2000, the nature reserves and the large protected areas.
Non-productive investments are encouraged. The funding measure is divided into the sub-areas "Special Habitat Protection Measures" and "Special Species and Species Aid Measures".
In the sub-area "Special Habitat Protection Measures", the implementation of spatially and temporally changing investment biotope protection projects is promoted. The following projects, among others, are eligible for funding:
- one-off and/or multiannual maintenance;
- Initial repairs (e.g. debushing, de-cussing, removal of pre-forest stages),
- Follow-up maintenance of previously repaired areas with possible subsequent extensive management,
- one-off accumulation measures (e.g. trench closures),
- Erection of embankments.
In the sub-area "Special species and species aid measures", the implementation of targeted, diverse and/or heterogeneous species conservation and species aid projects for typical species of the field is promoted. These include, but are not limited to:
- Projects for the protection of field and meadow birds (e.g. harrier species, ortolan, corncrake, crane, skylark, curlew, black-tailed godwit, lapwing)
- Projects for the protection of rare animal and plant species (e.g. hare, reptiles, wild herbs)
- Creation and maintenance of valuable cultural biotopes (e.g. hedgerows, orchards, small bodies of water and ditches)
In addition, external project management is also eligible for funding for the goal- and action-oriented implementation of the respective measure.
Eligible applicants
- Local authorities (in particular lower nature conservation authorities)
- Landscape conservation facilities and facilities for the management of protected areas
- Sponsors of nature parks, foundations and nature conservation associations
- Water and soil associations
