Which place to enter?

The location is used to determine the responsible office for the selected administrative service. In most cases you can enter your place of residence to find the competent authority. However, there are also cases in which a different location must be specified. Here are some examples:

Birth certificateYou want to get married and need a birth certificate. You live in Hanover, but you were born in Celle. You must therefore state your place of birth, i.e. Celle.

Business registrationYou would like to register a business in Braunschweig. Your place of residence is Hanover. You must therefore state the location of your future business, i.e. Braunschweig.

Apply for a building permitYou would like to build a house in Wunstorf and therefore apply for a building permit. Her place of residence is currently Hanover. You must indicate the place where the house is to be built. In this case it is Wunstorf.

Conversion of an existing domestic civil partnership into a marriage Application

A civil partnership is a union of two people of the same sex, which is regulated by law and equal to marriage.

The civil partnership is continued as a marriage after the conversion.

Who should I contact?

The registry office of the municipality, the Joint Community and the city in which you or your future spouse have his/her domicile or habitual residence are responsible for registering the conversion of the marriage.

If neither you nor your partner have his/her domicile or habitual residence in Germany, the registry office of the municipality, the joint municipality and the city before which the civil partnership is to be converted into a marriage is responsible for the registration.

Each German registry office is responsible for the conversion.

Which documents are required?

  • a valid passport or identity card or other official identification document with a photograph
  • a certificate from the registration authority of the main residence stating the first and last names, marital status, place of residence and nationality
  • in addition, a certificate from the registration office of the secondary residence if the registration of the conversion of the civil partnership into a marriage is made at the registry office of the secondary residence
  • your civil partnership certificate or a printout from the civil partnership register if the existing civil partnership was not established at the registry office where the conversion was registered

What are the fees?

Fee: free of charge
at the registry office responsible for registration and within the normal office hours of the registry office

Emission: 25,00 EUR
Payment in advance: no
at a registry office other than the one responsible for the registration and within the normal working hours of the registry office

Payment in advance: no
outside the normal office hours of the registry office, except in case of life-threatening illness of one of the spouses

Process flow

The intended conversion of the existing domestic civil partnership must be notified to the competent authority.
