Extension of the residence permit for the continuation of studies begun in another EU country
If you come from a country outside the European Union (EU), have been studying in another EU member state for at least 2 years and are recognized there as a person entitled to protection, you can obtain a residence permit to continue your studies in Germany.
This residence permit is a temporary residence permit. If your residence permit is about to expire, you can have it extended, for example for
- for the duration of a compulsory period of study or
- an exchange program that has not yet ended.
The same conditions apply for the extension of a residence permit for the purpose of studying as for the granting of a residence permit. As a rule, you cannot extend your residence permit if the immigration authority has already ruled this out when issuing it or when it was last extended.
You may work for up to 140 days a year with the residence permit you have received for the purpose of studying. You can also work part-time as a student for an unlimited period of time.
