Responsibility lies with the district and the independent city in which you have your residence.

The main residence according to the identity card is decisive. In the case of legal entities, it is the registered office of the main branch or the registered office of the branch.

You must submit the application in person or through a person authorized in writing (e.g. car dealer). If an application form is required, you can obtain this in advance from the relevant office and complete it at home. A download form or an online service via the Internet may be available. Your insurance company will be automatically informed by the competent authority about the allocation of the seasonal license plate. The vehicle must be presented to the competent authority, unless this is waived.

• current identity card or passport with confirmation of registration - not older than 3 months
• Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) according to § 23 Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV) with indication of the seasonal period
• Registration certificate part I
• Registration certificate part II or operating license (for vehicles that do not require registration but do require a license plate)
• Test report of the last valid general inspection (HU)
  • Not applicable for vehicles whose first general inspection was not yet due
• Previous license plates
• Reservation confirmation for the desired license plate, if applicable
• SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax
  • This must be submitted in writing and signed by the holder in the original upon registration, including by third parties. If the account holder is different, this mandate must be signed in the original by the owner and the account holder. Proof of the specified bank details must be provided.
  • Alternatively:
    • Certificate stating that the main customs office waives the collection of motor vehicle tax or
    • Proof of tax exemption
• If applicable, certificate of deregistration/decommissioning prior to October 1, 2005

In the case of completion by a third party, additionally

• informal, written authorization from the person making the application and identity card of the person for whom the vehicle is to be registered

additionally for companies:

• Extract from the trade register or commercial register
• the identification documents of the person responsible and authorized to sign (managing director, authorized signatory) and their power of attorney

In addition, there are costs for the license plates, which you can obtain from the local plate manufacturers.

When registering the vehicle, you specify once the period - at least 2 to a maximum of 11 months per year - during which you wish to use the vehicle. Outside of this operating period, the vehicle must be parked on private property (e.g. in a garage).

You can have the license plates produced while the seasonal license plate is being issued. To do this, contact the private providers, who are usually located near the relevant authorities. The costs for the plates are not included in the fees. The seasonal license plates are stamped by the competent authority, i.e. they are provided with stickers for the main inspection (HU) and the registration district.

No deadlines need to be observed.

If you change the seasonal period, you will need a new insurance confirmation and new plates (but not a new license plate, i.e. no other letter or number combination) for the vehicle.

If you would like to reserve a license plate, this can be done in person, in writing, by telephone or as an online service via the Internet before the new registration, depending on the services offered by the responsible office.
