Apply for a Translator's Scholarship in the Field of Literature

The state of Lower Saxony intends to support translators of literary works in the field of literature through a project-related scholarship in 2024. The scholarship is intended to enable the scholarship recipient to work more intensively on a translation and to have it published. The place of production of the subsidised translation can be chosen freely. The scholarship is intended to promote cultural exchange by translating a High German publication into a foreign language or translating a foreign-language work into High German.

The amount of the scholarship for translations is up to 7,800 euros.

The funding decision is made by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture. Funding recommendations are drawn up by the Lower Saxony Literature Commission.

If you have submitted applications to several funding institutions, you as the applicant or grant recipient must inform the Ministry of this and also notify them immediately of a positive funding decision by another institution. Multiple funding is generally excluded.

Process flow

The application and attachments must be submitted online by 15.01.2024.

The application must be accompanied in digital form:

Requirements

  • The prerequisite for funding is a translation activity in the form of a publication that has been proven by a recognised publisher (not self-publishing and not by ZuzahlVerlag). In addition, written confirmation from a recognized publisher for the specific translation project with the essential data (fee agreements and deadline) should be available. If there is no contract, this is not an exclusion criterion.

The following can be funded:

  • You if your main area of residence or work is in Lower Saxony and you translate foreign-language literature into German or German literature into a foreign language.
  • You as a translator if you translate the works of Lower Saxony authors or literature related to Lower Saxony into a foreign language. In this case, the residential or production location of Lower Saxony is to be regarded as secondary. Furthermore, there is the possibility that recognised publishers in Lower Saxony submit an application for a translator.
  • A scholarship will not be awarded if you receive regular benefits from third parties (e.g. residency or work scholarships) or other funding from the state in the field of literature during 2024.
  • Applications for projects that have already been rejected in a previous year can only be reconsidered after a fundamental revision.

Which documents are required?

  • Curriculum vitae without photo

  • Reading sample of a maximum of 10 manuscript pages
  • Confirmation from the publisher (e.g. contract)
