New passport issue due to change of name on divorce or dissolution of civil partnership
After a name change due to divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership, a new passport is required.
A new passport only needs to be issued if the passport is still being used.
Which documents are required?
- current biometric photo, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal photo without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
- the current passport
- birth certificate
- divorce certificate. The submission of family registers is also accepted.
- Judicial decision on the dissolution of the civil partnership

The applicant must appear in person to apply for a passport (e-passport). The application is completed on the spot with the processor. The applicant only has to sign the application.

It is not possible to extend the period of validity.

What else should I know?
You cannot take your passport with you immediately after submitting your application, as it is produced at the Federal Printing Office in Berlin. If the passport is needed earlier, an express passport can be applied for.
