Display of Geological Surveys in Northern Germany (AGU)
Geological surveys must be reported to the State Office for Mining, Energy and Geology (LBEG) two weeks before the start of the work. This must be done by the person carrying out or commissioning the work.
A geological survey generally includes all geological, geophysical, mineralogical, geochemical, pedological, geothermal and geotechnical measurements and recordings of the earth's surface, subsoil, soil or groundwater. These can be carried out using trenching, drilling, field or borehole measurements and other exploration methods such as remote sensing. It also includes the preparation of analyses and the evaluation of specialist data, for example in the form of expert reports, studies or spatial models of the geological subsurface.
In addition to this notification, there is also an obligation to notify the authorities of earth excavations or boreholes in accordance with the Water Resources Act and the Federal Mining Act. In this case, it is also necessary to apply for a water law or mining law procedure. You must submit these notifications and applications separately to the authorities responsible for the investigation site in compliance with the statutory deadlines.
You can use a PDF document generated in the online service "Notification of geological investigations" (AGU) for the notification of excavations or boreholes in accordance with the Water Resources Act. Enter all the details, sign and send the form to the responsible authority. If the geological investigations are boreholes with a drilling distance >100 m, the mining authority will be informed automatically.
Who should I contact?

The LBEG provides an online application to comply with the legal obligation to notify geological investigations. All geological investigations must be reported via this online application no later than two weeks before work begins.
The online application "Notification of geological investigations in northern Germany" enables you to
- enter the contact details of the person carrying out the work, the client and, if applicable, the consulting company for a project with one or more individual investigations once.
- enter or upload the location of the survey area as geometry in a map application,
- after recording the investigation area, to specify the name and purpose of the investigation, the type, the planned investigation methods, the expected scope and the planned duration of the investigation,
- transmit the data online to the LBEG, categorizing the data as specialist or assessment data and assigning the investigation methods used.
