Environmental impact assessment
For a large number of projects that are expected to have significant environmental impacts, an environmental impact assessment (EIA) is required as part of the authorisation process. These include, for example, motorways, federal highways, railways, waterways, dikes, sewage treatment plants, landfills, high-voltage lines, industrial zones or facilities or intensive livestock farming.
In this procedure, the effects on humans, animals and plants, water, soil, noise, air, climate, cultural and material assets as well as the interactions are examined, described and evaluated. The results of the environmental impact assessment must be taken into account in the decisions of the authorities.
The public must be involved in the EIA.
The EIA is a dependent part of the relevant administrative procedure that serves to decide on the project in question ("piggyback procedure").
