Applying for an extension of a driver's license by a further driving license category
Are you already the holder of a driving license and would like to extend it by a further driving license (class)?
In principle, the provisions of the initial issue apply to the extension of a driving license
There are exceptions for
- the extension of category A1 to category A2 and the extension of category A2 to category A:
If you have previously held category A1 or category A2 for two years, you only have to take one practical test in each case (upgrade).
- upgrading from category B to category BE, from category C1 to category C1E, from category D to category DE and from category D1 to category D1E:
Only one practical test needs to be taken in each case.

Process flow
You must apply for a driver's license for the first time.
The driving license authority will determine whether there are any concerns about your suitability. This takes a certain amount of time, which is why the application should be submitted at the latest at the start of driving school training.
A driving license can only be issued once the applicant has been checked. The application expires if the theory test has not been passed within twelve months of receipt of the test application or the practical test has not been passed within twelve months of passing the theory test.
As a rule, the driving license is issued upon passing the driving test.
The driving license application is generally valid for two years. It expires if the theory test is not passed within twelve months of receipt of the test application or the practical test is not passed within twelve months of passing the theory test.
What deadlines do I have to pay attention to?
The application for an extension of a driving license expires if the theory test has not been passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order or the practical test has not been passed within 12 months of passing the theory test or, if no theory test is required, the practical test has not been passed within 12 months of receipt of the test order.
- The driving license categories A1, A2, AM, L, T, B, BE, A are to be issued without a time limit.
- Driving licenses for categories C, C1, CE, C1E, D1, D1E, D and DE are limited to five years from the date of issue.
