Provision of a vehicle: certificate
Since 1 January 2007, last owners of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (i.e. vehicles for the carriage of goods up to 3.5 tonnes) have had the possibility to return the end-of-life vehicles they wish to dispose of to the manufacturer or importer free of charge. They are obliged to take back end-of-life vehicles and must set up a comprehensive take-back system themselves or through commissioned third parties. End-of-life vehicles from which essential parts or components or electronic control units have been removed and which were not registered in the European Union at least 1 month before the final decommissioning are exempt from free take-back.
If you, as the vehicle owner, would like to have your disused vehicle permanently withdrawn from circulation, leave it to one of the competent authorities for disposal. There you will receive a certificate of destruction, which must be presented to the vehicle registration office for deregistration.
Who should I contact?
The responsibility lies with a recognised acceptance or return point or a recognised dismantling company. Furthermore, you can return your old car to the manufacturer or importer free of charge.
Addresses of companies in your area can be obtained, for example, from the motor vehicle guild, at the automobile clubs and at the responsible authorities, as well as on the Internet on the pages of the manufacturers or at the Joint Office for End-of-Life Vehicles (GESA).
