Which place to enter?

The location is used to determine the responsible office for the selected administrative service. In most cases you can enter your place of residence to find the competent authority. However, there are also cases in which a different location must be specified. Here are some examples:

Birth certificateYou want to get married and need a birth certificate. You live in Hanover, but you were born in Celle. You must therefore state your place of birth, i.e. Celle.

Business registrationYou would like to register a business in Braunschweig. Your place of residence is Hanover. You must therefore state the location of your future business, i.e. Braunschweig.

Apply for a building permitYou would like to build a house in Wunstorf and therefore apply for a building permit. Her place of residence is currently Hanover. You must indicate the place where the house is to be built. In this case it is Wunstorf.

Driver's license issue new due to name change

Although there is no legal regulation that says that the driver's license must be changed after you have adopted a new surname by marriage or other reasons. However, if it is not apparent in the identity card that the holder of the driving licence has once used the name on the driving licence, a change is urgently advised. The same applies to a change of first name, date of birth or place of birth. A change of address is not entered in the driver's license and is therefore not to be reported.

Which documents are required?

  • Identity card or passport with current confirmation of registration
  • previous driver's license
  • Current biometrics-compatible photograph, in passport format (45 x 35 mm) in portrait format, frontal shot without border, without headgear and without covering the eyes
  • in case of name change due to marriage: additionally certified copy of the marriage certificate, if the name has not yet been changed in the identity card
  • in case of name change due to divorce: additional name change certificate from the registry office, if the name has not yet been changed in the identity card
  • in addition, a copy of the index card (list of the current driving licence data), if the driving licence was issued before 1.1.1999. This can usually be requested by telephone from the competent authority that issued the driving licence.

What deadlines do I have to pay attention to?

The exhibition usually lasts about two weeks.
