Applying for an H license plate for historic vehicles
Vehicles are considered "historic" if they were first registered at least 30 years ago. The date of the first registration is decisive.

Requirements
Vehicles are considered historic if they
- primarily serve to maintain the cultural heritage of motor vehicles,
- are not used for commercial purposes,
- were first registered at least 30 years ago,
- have been inspected by an officially recognized expert, a technical inspection body or a test engineer from a monitoring organization and
- are in a good original state of preservation.
Applications / forms
If the competent authority requires an application form, you can obtain this in advance from the competent authority or, depending on the service offered by the competent authority, retrieve it on the Internet.
If you would like a special license plate, the application or reservation can be made in person, in writing, by telephone or as an online service via the Internet, depending on the service offered by the competent authority.
Which documents are required?
- current identity card or passport with confirmation of registration - not older than 3 months

Electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) according to § 23 Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV)
- SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of vehicle tax
- This must be submitted in writing and signed by the owner in the original upon registration, including by third parties. If the account holder is different, this mandate must be signed in the original by the owner and the account holder. Proof of the specified bank details must be provided.
- Alternatively:
- Certificate according to which the main customs office waives the collection of motor vehicle tax or
- Proof of tax exemption

Process flow
The application must be submitted in person or by a person authorized in writing. Your insurance company and the main customs office will be informed by the responsible office about the allocation of the license plate.
