Which place to enter?

The location is used to determine the responsible office for the selected administrative service. In most cases you can enter your place of residence to find the competent authority. However, there are also cases in which a different location must be specified. Here are some examples:

Birth certificateYou want to get married and need a birth certificate. You live in Hanover, but you were born in Celle. You must therefore state your place of birth, i.e. Celle.

Business registrationYou would like to register a business in Braunschweig. Your place of residence is Hanover. You must therefore state the location of your future business, i.e. Braunschweig.

Apply for a building permitYou would like to build a house in Wunstorf and therefore apply for a building permit. Her place of residence is currently Hanover. You must indicate the place where the house is to be built. In this case it is Wunstorf.

Registration certificate notification - due to loss


In the event of loss of registration certificate I or II, replacement documents shall be issued by the competent authority. If you suspect theft, you should definitely call the police!

Who should I contact?

The responsibility lies with the district, the district-free city and the municipality, joint municipality and city entrusted with this task.

The main residence according to the identity card is decisive. In the case of legal persons, this is the registered office of the main establishment or the registered office of the branch.

Which documents are required?

In case of loss of the registration certificate Part I (or old vehicle registration document):

  • Registration certificate II or old vehicle registration document
  • affidavit of loss
  • valid report of the main inspection (HU)
  • valid identity documents of the vehicle owner
    • Identity card or passport with confirmation of registration - not older than 3 months
    • Driver's license and similar documents are not recognized!
  • for companies: Excerpt from the trade or commercial register
  • a power of attorney if a delegated person applies for the registration certificate Part I
    • the authorized person must identify himself

In case of loss of the registration certificate Part II (or old vehicle registration document):

  • Registration certificate I or old vehicle registration document
  • affidavit of loss
  • If the registration certificate II/vehicle registration document was not handed over to the owner personally at the time of registration, a certificate from the authorised person (e.g. car dealership) is required stating that the registration certificate II/vehicle registration document has meanwhile been handed over to the owner.
  • valid identity documents of the vehicle owner
    • Identity card or passport with confirmation of registration - not older than 3 months
    • Driver's license and similar documents are not recognized!
  • for companies: Excerpt from the trade or commercial register
  • The registration certificate II/vehicle registration document is issued by the Federal Motor Transport Authority and published in the Verkehrsblatt. Only after completion of the bidding procedure can the new registration certificate II be issued and handed over.

In the case of theft, a certificate of filing a complaint must be presented to the police.

What are the fees?

The reissue of a registration certificate is subject to a fee.

What deadlines do I have to pay attention to?

The issue and handing over of the replacement registration certificate Part II takes place after expiry of the application period, usually about 6 weeks after application.

What else should I know?

In the event of loss or theft of the registration certificate Part II , authorisation is not possible. The registered holder must appear in person at the competent authority in order to submit the affidavit.
