Which place to enter?

The location is used to determine the responsible office for the selected administrative service. In most cases you can enter your place of residence to find the competent authority. However, there are also cases in which a different location must be specified. Here are some examples:

Birth certificateYou want to get married and need a birth certificate. You live in Hanover, but you were born in Celle. You must therefore state your place of birth, i.e. Celle.

Business registrationYou would like to register a business in Braunschweig. Your place of residence is Hanover. You must therefore state the location of your future business, i.e. Braunschweig.

Apply for a building permitYou would like to build a house in Wunstorf and therefore apply for a building permit. Her place of residence is currently Hanover. You must indicate the place where the house is to be built. In this case it is Wunstorf.

Apply for an International Mortuary Passport


You want to transport a deceased person to a place outside Lower Saxony. In order to be able to carry out the transport, an international mortuary passport may be required. You can also have it applied for by the funeral home in charge of the transport.

Who should I contact?

The responsibility lies with the health authorities of the district or the district-free city.

Requirements

- The certificate of release from the public prosecutor's office required for the issuance of an international mortuary passport in the event of an unexplained cause of death or an uncertainly identified deceased person is available.

- The transport regulations in accordance with the International Convention on the Transport of Corpses are complied with.

Which documents are required?

- written, informal application

- in case of application by a funeral home: written power of attorney

- Certificate of proper coffin and compliance with the transport regulations in accordance with the International Convention for the Carriage of Corpses (IALB) by the funeral home

- Death certificate with confidential section

- Death certificate or death notice from the registry office

- Certificate of release from the public prosecutor's office in case it is not a natural death or the deceased person cannot be identified with certainty.

Process flow

The application can be submitted either by you as a private individual or by the commissioned funeral home to the health department of the place of death.

Only when all the necessary documents have been obtained and all requirements have been met can the health department process the application for the issuance of an international mortuary passport.

What deadlines do I have to pay attention to?

There are no deadlines to be observed.

What else should I know?

When transporting a corpse abroad, the legal regulations of the destination country and the countries of transit must be observed. Information can be obtained from the relevant consulates and embassies of these countries.
