Report a work, commuting or school accident to the statutory accident insurance provider
As a company or institution, you are obliged to report work, commuting and school accidents to the statutory accident insurance. The obligation to report exists if the person involved in the accident is expected to be unable to work for more than 3 days. In the case of children, schoolchildren and students, you must report every accident that requires medical treatment.
After your notification, the statutory accident insurance will check whether and to what extent insurance cover exists. For example, it will check whether the accident is related to work or, for example, school attendance. The accident insurance company also automatically checks which benefits are payable.
According to the law, the industrial employers' liability insurance associations are responsible for all companies, institutions and freelancers. The industrial employers' liability insurance associations are organized by sector. The regional accident insurance funds are responsible for public sector companies, for example for accidents involving schoolchildren.

You can report a work or commuting accident online.
- Fill out the online form on the service portal of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) by answering the questions about the accident.
- If possible, have information about your responsible accident insurance institution and membership number ready. This will enable your report to be forwarded to the correct accident insurance institution more quickly.
- Your report will be processed as soon as we receive your online form. Once you have completed the web form, you will receive a copy of the accident report to download and the contact details of your accident insurance provider.
- The statutory accident insurance or accident insurance fund will then automatically check which benefits are payable. You do not need to submit a further application.
Note: The injured person should consult an accident insurance physician after the accident at work. They have special knowledge and experience in the field of accident medicine. In an emergency, rapid medical assistance is of course important and any doctor can be consulted.
