Apply for permission to use the professional title of dietician

Working as a dietician is regulated in Germany.

In order to work as a dietician in Germany, you must apply for a state permit. With this permit, you may use the professional title "dietician" or "diet assistant" and work in the profession.

You must apply for the permit at the responsible office.

Once you have submitted the application and all documents are complete, the competent body will check whether you meet all the requirements.

If you meet all the requirements, you will receive the permit.

You may not start working until you have received the permit.

The permit is granted if you

  • have completed the vocational or higher education training prescribed by this Act and have passed the final state examination
  • have not been guilty of any conduct that would render you unreliable to practice the profession,
  • are not unfit for the practice of the profession from a health point of view
  • have the knowledge of the German language required for the practice of the profession

You will need the following documents to process the application:

  • Proof of the state examination certificate, confirming that the training period prescribed by the respective law has been completed and the state examination has been passed, or the certificate confirming the equivalence of the foreign professional qualification.
  • Proof of reliability; this is a confirmation that the person is not guilty of any behavior that would make him/her unreliable to practice the profession. This can be done by submitting an official certificate of good conduct for presentation to the authorities, not older than 3 months at the time the permit is granted.
  • a medical certificate stating that the person is not unfit to exercise the profession from a health point of view
  • confirmation that you have the knowledge of the German language required for the exercise of the occupation

Is based on the respective administrative fee regulations of the state or on the fee statutes of the bodies responsible under state law.

There are no deadlines to be observed.

If the documents are complete, your application will be processed promptly.
