Permit and exemption for large-capacity and heavy goods traffic: issue
Traffic on public roads with vehicles and trains whose dimensions, axle loads or total weights actually exceed the limits generally permitted by law requires special permission.
Preconditions
A permit or exemption may only be granted if certain conditions are met, e.g.:
- carriage of an indivisible cargo,
- transport by rail or water not possible,
- suitable route available.
Procedure
A permit or exemption shall be granted upon written request. Applications can be submitted by fax, e-mail or online via the nationwide procedure management for large-capacity and heavy transports (VEMAGS).

What deadlines do I have to pay attention to?
The application should always be made 14 days before the transport is carried out.
An individual permit or exemption is valid for a journey with a vehicle or a combination of vehicles.
A permanent permit or exemption for up to a maximum of 3 years may only be granted if, in addition to the requirements for an individual licence, other conditions are met, e.g.:
- police escort is not required,
- only for certain routes,
- or for all roads under the jurisdiction of the licensing authority and the neighbouring road traffic authorities.
