Register of craftsmen Registration of a craft ancillary business


A craft ancillary business exists if, in conjunction with another business superordinate as the main enterprise, craft services are provided to third parties to a not inconsiderable extent. There is an obligation to be entered in the Register of Craftsmen for craft ancillary businesses which:

  • with a utility or other commercial enterprise under public law,
  • with a company of a craft subject to licensing, industry, trade, agriculture or other economic and professional sectors

are linked if goods or services are produced or provided in them for third parties (not for the main business) in a craft subject to licensing. Ancillary companies according to § 3 Handwerksordnung (HwO) are not subject to registration.

Who should I contact?

The responsibility lies with the Chamber of Crafts (HWK), in whose district the main business or the secondary operation is located.

This procedure can also be carried out through a "Point of Single Contact". The "Point of Single Contact" is a special service offered by municipalities and the state for service providers.

Which documents are required?

  • for sole proprietorships:
    • Application for registration
    • Copy of identity cardor comparable identification document
    • Proof of qualification (copy of master craftsman's certificate, technical certificate, etc.) of the owner (see there for employed plant manager)
    • Copy of business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)
  • for companies under civil law (GbR):
    • Application for registration
    • Copies of the identity cardor a comparable identification document of the partners or authorised representatives
    • Copy of the articles of association
    • Proof of qualification (copy of master craftsman's certificate, technical certificate, etc.) of all shareholders (see there for employed plant manager)
    • Copy of business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)
  • for GmbH, Unternehmergesellschaft (haftungsbeschränkt), AG, OHG, KG, GmbH & Co. KG and other domestic or foreign companies:
    • Application for registration
    • Copies of the identity cardor a comparable identification document of the partners or authorised representatives
    • Copy of the extract from the commercial register - in the case of a company belonging to the EU: submission of a translation of the extract from the registerof the country of origin
    • Copy of business registration (can be submitted later after entry in the register of craftsmen)
  • in the case of the appointment of a manager:
    • • Operations manager's declaration
    • • Copy of the manager's employment contract
    • • Proof of qualification of the plant manager (copy of master craftsman's certificate, diploma certificate, industrial master craftsman's certificate, technical product, exemption, exercise authorization, etc.)
    • • If applicable, confirmation of registration from the collection office (health insurance fund) about the registration of the employee
